SUMMER READING RETURNS TO THE LIVERMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Summer reading is for everyone at the Livermore Public Library! The 2017 Summer Reading Program has four different levels of reading programs: pre-readers, independent readers, teens, and adults. Pre-readers and independent readers will pick up their summer reading game boards at the library. Teens entering grades 6-12 will have bingo boards to complete and win prizes. Adults will log books online for weekly raffles. Prizes will be awarded in all programs, with the goal of reading, sharing what was read, and having fun! Independent readers, teens and adults can register on the Summer Reading Registration Page . All programs run through August 14th.
“Reading by Design” is the theme of the 2017 Summer Reading Program and is inspired by the creativity of authors, illustrators, builders, inventors, artists, architects, and more. The Livermore Public Library is committed to supporting youth summer learning through the Summer Reading Program. A study by Dominican University found that “children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school in the fall. Children who participate in Summer Reading Programs and read a minimum of six books over the summer score higher in reading and math when they return to school.”
Independent readers age four and up will register online and then complete a board game as they read, earning prizes along the way. Prizes may include ice cream vouchers, swimming and bowling passes, science kits, and more. Independent readers who reach the final reading goal will also receive a medal, a presentation to the City Council as a Super Reader, and will get to pick out a free book.
Younger pre-readers, including babies, can play their own special game board. Parents and children read together to earn stickers along the way. Those who complete their boards will earn a tub of Play-doh and a free book.
Teens are invited to join in the summer reading fun as well. Those entering 6th through 12th grades can play Summer Reading Bingo and earn raffle entries for a chance a winning a variety of prizes, including gift cards and a tablet. Each participant who completes the first level of the game is guaranteed a prize! Go online at www.livermorelibrary.net starting June 7 to register and begin recording the books you read through August 14.
Adults have their own reading program as well. Starting June 7, adults can visit the library’s website to sign up and log their books read. For every book they rate and review, participants earn points and a chance to win great prizes raffled off throughout the summer. Raffle prizes include movie tickets and gift certificates to local restaurants and merchants.
Complementing the Summer Reading Programs will be a host of activities and entertainment, including performers, special events, and crafts. The Livermore Public Library’s Summer Reading Program includes something for everyone. All events are free and open to the public; however, some may require registration to participate.
